A legend.

If you think about flagship headphones, naturally, there will only be a handful that come to mind - but one of the first ones is going to be the Susvara. First released in 2017, it has since absolutely cemented itself as a constant in the high end hifi space. It is one of those, like the Utopia, that can be called a high end allrounder - but:

While Utopia focuses on Punch and Dynamics, Susvara has a wider stage, offers more detail in the treble and faster transients - Utopia stings like a bee, but Susvara floats like a butterfly.

Especially with the right amplifier, it is easy to grasp why it sits somewhere in the top 3 of every reviewer:

Soundnews.net:

It would be extremely difficult beating them at their own game and their game is an extended frequency response, fast and impactful transients, ultimate levels of detail retrieval and a natural sounding soundstage, putting plenty of headphones to shame when it comes to technicalities. I didn’t experience every single headphone out there yet, but from the ones I’ve tried, these impressed me the most. It is my pleasure awarding them my absolute highest Gold Award.

Headfonics.com:

The Hifiman Susvara is an absolute joy to listen to almost anything with. It is one of the most immersive and technically capable planars that I have heard to date and fully justifies its summit-fi status in terms of sonic capability. The speed, imagining, and control are more electrostatic in nature than planar at times and there is never a moment where I start feeling weighed down by fatigue. They bring a delightfully involving dimension to almost every source track I throw at it., Gold Award.

Headphones.com:

At the beginning of this review I had set out to determine if the HiFiMAN Susvara is indeed that elusive planar flagship that doesn't have any of the trade-offs that I've been confronted with so far, and I can confidently say that it is. Granted, it costs a fortune, but if I had that fortune, this is the headphone that I would buy. It's comfortable with a modest weight, extremely detailed and technically proficient, and has an agreeable frequency response and tonal balance that doesn't throw anything off. At the moment, this is my favorite headphone, period.

Measurements:

What does this mean?

The black line is something that could be called the „ideal“ curve of what a headphone should sound like. The Harman Research Group has a range of scientific studies around audio and the human perception of it - one of which was, how should a headphone sound like to be favored by a majority of people, no matter the age or other demographic variables? This result is called the Harman target.

From left to right we have the sub bass, bass, mids and then the curve finally tilts upward where the treble begins - this part of the frequency spectrum gets amplified naturally by the shape of the human ear.
