Building on the first generation of the Empyrean, Meze refined its tuning and brought out something that plays in the same sonic league as the really really big guys - while already being the frontrunner when it comes to comfort and quality.

The Hybrid Array

It all starts with the driver. Meze and Rinaro partner together to give a little twist to the concept of planar-magnetic drivers:

The surface gets divided into 2 areas, one of which is spiral shaped and can reproduce high frequencies, up to 110kHz - while the other area is covered by a curved zigzag pattern that uses its large surface area to reproduce mids and bass down to 8Hz.

Sustainability

Meze aims to build products that bring joy and utility for a long time. Every part can be repaired or replaced, nothing is glued, nothing is a secret - through radical transparency, Meze wants to deliver the message that quality has nothing to do with mysticism and everything to do with design and execution.

Sound

One more strength of this headphone is, of course, its sound: Take a treble reproduction that is very reminiscent of a Sennheiser HD800S but add that a bass quality that only planars can deliver - linear down to the lowest lows.

Very open and detailed, but doesn't miss the chance to rumble when asked for and is just a ton of fun to listen to - on a very, very high level.

It is also easy to drive, at a very efficient 105dB SPL @ 1V and just 32Ω impedance.

With numerous choices of cables and terminations, the Empyrean II can utilize this flexibility to its fullest.

The emotional involvement was incredible, the refinement a delight and the soundstage placement remarkable. For me, the midrange was the standout and rendered human voice in an utterly believable manner. That said, the bass and treble were also outstanding.
