Rockna Wavelight Server – audiophile music server with FPGA architecture, I2S output, integrated storage and flexible software platform for uncompromising digital playback.
Audiophile music server with FPGA architecture, I2S output and integrated storage
The Rockna Wavelight Server (WLS) is a no-compromise high-end digital source designed for demanding audiophile playback. Developed as the ideal partner for the Rockna Wavelight and Rockna Wavedream DAC, it reaches its full potential especially when paired with DACs featuring an I2S input, while remaining fully universal in any high-end setup.
Alongside its I2S output, the WLS provides USB, AES/EBU, SPDIF and optical Toslink outputs, ensuring seamless integration into virtually any digital audio chain.
The Wavelight Server consolidates multiple core elements of a modern audio system into a single device. It eliminates the need for a separate computer-based server, removes the requirement for high CPU power when performing PCM-to-DSD transcoding, and can function as a fully integrated storage solution for your music library.
All of this is housed in a refined chassis, visually matching the Wavelight DAC. The result is a clean, elegant and highly optimized audiophile solution.
Internally, the WLS combines a carefully selected set of components tailored for high-end digital audio playback: a linear power supply, a low-power computing platform running custom Linux, and a powerful FPGA/DSP-based audio management system.
This architecture is specifically designed to keep heat and RFI emissions low, while ensuring that demanding processing tasks are handled efficiently and without degrading signal quality.
One of the defining features of the WLS is its ability to handle audio processing tasks on a hardware level. Upsampling and format conversion are performed by the FPGA instead of relying on CPU resources.
This allows for hardware-based upsampling up to DSD512 while maintaining low thermal and electrical interference, resulting in a cleaner and more stable digital signal path.
The Wavelight Server supports a wide range of playback environments and can be configured to suit different system architectures. It can operate as a Roon Server, Roon Bridge, MPD server, UPnP AV renderer, OpenHome renderer, HQPlayer NAA or AirPlay renderer.
This flexibility allows it to function either as a central core unit or as a dedicated renderer or endpoint within a larger system.
The WLS is designed to act as a complete music hub. It is available with internal storage configurations ranging from 2TB up to 16TB, capable of storing thousands of albums in high-quality, uncompressed formats.
In addition, the unit offers three USB ports for external drives, and supports integration of a NAS (Network Attached Storage) as an additional music source.
The WLS features a comprehensive control interface accessible via local browser or app. Users can manage storage, select active services, configure upsampling parameters, adjust I2S compatibility settings, rip CDs directly to internal storage and enable room correction features.
Both the operating system and FPGA firmware are updatable via the internet, ensuring long-term flexibility and continuous improvement.
