Guide
What makes ZMF headphones special
ZMF is one of those manufacturers where technical development and craftsmanship are particularly closely linked. Instead of producing uniform mass-market products, the headphones are made in comparatively small numbers and assembled by hand in numerous steps. Especially characteristic are the housings turned from solid wood, whose grain gives every headphone an individual look.
Behind the elaborate exterior, however, there is far more than design. ZMF develops its own driver solutions and acoustic systems that allow resonances, air movement and rear-wave energy to be influenced deliberately. These include the Atrium Damping System (ADS), used across several models. The planar-magnetic headphones add further design solutions such as CAMS.
Sonically, ZMF therefore cannot sensibly be reduced to the common cliché of a fundamentally “warm” headphone. Many models do have a full-bodied, natural and musical presentation, but they differ considerably in neutrality, bass emphasis, spatiality, directness and resolving power.
It is precisely this variety that makes ZMF so interesting: from a relaxed, colourful headphone for long listening sessions to a high-resolution planar model for the most demanding listening, the portfolio covers very different voicings.
Which ZMF headphone suits you?
Choosing the right ZMF headphone depends less on which model sits highest in the range on paper. What matters far more is which kind of presentation you prefer, whether you need an open or a closed headphone, and which amplification it will be run from. As a rough orientation:
- ZMF Bokeh Open and Bokeh Closed – the most accessible entry point: 80 ohms, easy to drive and more everyday-friendly than the larger models.
- ZMF Auteur Classic – the neutral classic with a biocellulose driver, versatile across all genres.
- ZMF Atrium Open and Atrium Closed – the warm, enjoyment-oriented side of the brand: 300-ohm dynamic drivers with the Atrium Damping System, particularly spacious when open, particularly full-bodied in the bass when closed.
- ZMF Caldera Open and Caldera Closed – the planar-magnetic flagship models: high resolution and control without sounding clinical.
- ZMF Tessidera – a planar driver with a smoother, more accessible voicing.
- ZMF Ori 3.0 – a closed planar with powerful delivery and bass plugs for fine-tuning.
All models in direct comparison – with drivers, impedance, price class, pad recommendations and sound character – can be found in our detailed ZMF model comparison.
ZMF Atrium, Bokeh & Co.: open or closed?
Many ZMF models are available in both open and closed versions. The choice between the two designs affects not only isolation, but also the spatial and tonal perception of the headphone.
Open headphones let sound out and ambient noise in. They are therefore suited above all to quiet listening environments. Their strength often lies in a particularly free and airy spatial presentation. Models such as the ZMF Atrium Open, Bokeh Open or Caldera Open can convey a very wide and natural sense of space.
Closed headphones, by contrast, reduce the exchange of sound with the surroundings. That is helpful not only when other people should not be disturbed; it can also change the perception of low frequencies and the physical impact of the presentation. The ZMF Atrium Closed, Bokeh Closed or Caldera Closed are by no means merely closed versions of their open counterparts, but each have their own sonic voicing.
Neither design is fundamentally better than the other. Anyone who listens exclusively in a quiet room and values maximum openness will often lean towards an open model. Anyone who needs isolation or prefers a particularly immediate and powerful presentation can be just as well served by a closed ZMF.
Ear pads as part of the voicing
At ZMF, the ear pads carry unusual weight. Different pads influence not only comfort and the distance between ear and driver, but can also audibly change bass response, midrange presence, treble and spatial presentation.
They therefore offer an interesting way to adapt an existing ZMF headphone more closely to your own preferences. A pad with a different shape, material thickness or surface can, for example, make the presentation appear more direct or more spacious, emphasise the bass more strongly, or alter the treble.
ZMF offers various pad series for this, such as Auteur, Universe, BE2, Eikon or Ori pads. Not every pad suits every headphone and every desired voicing equally well, however. It is therefore advisable to choose pads not only by material or comfort, but always with their sonic effects in mind.
Which headphone amplifier suits ZMF?
ZMF headphones also differ considerably when it comes to choosing an amplifier. Models such as the Bokeh work at 80 ohms and place comparatively moderate demands on the electronics. The classic dynamic ZMF models Auteur Classic and Atrium, on the other hand, have an impedance of 300 ohms.
That does not automatically mean they require exceptionally high power. A suitable headphone amplifier should, however, provide sufficient voltage and match the respective model well electrically. With high-quality ZMF Headphones, the quality and voicing of the amplifier can become clearly audible.
The combination with a tube headphone amplifier can be particularly rewarding. High-impedance dynamic headphones such as the Atrium or Auteur Classic in particular often work excellently with suitable tube circuits. Depending on the amplifier, spatiality, tonal colours and three-dimensional presentation can be emphasised further.
Tube amplification is by no means mandatory, though. High-quality solid-state amplifiers and DAC/amp combinations can work outstandingly well with ZMF headphones too. With the planar-magnetic models, current delivery and control matter more than the high output voltage that is relevant for many 300-ohm dynamic designs.
The right combination should therefore always be considered starting from the specific headphone model and the desired sound character.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about ZMF headphones
What distinguishes headphones from ZMF?
ZMF headphones combine hand-crafted wooden housings with independent acoustic development. Typical traits are a natural, full-bodied presentation, high-quality materials and a very individual voicing of each model.
Which ZMF headphone is a good starting point?
The ZMF Bokeh is a particularly accessible entry point. It works at 80 ohms, is comparatively easy to drive and is offered in both open and closed versions.
Which ZMF headphone sounds particularly warm?
The ZMF Atrium is one of the warmer and more relaxed voicings – ZMF introduced it in 2022 with exactly that aim. It suits listeners who value tonal colour, body and a presentation that stays comfortable over long sessions. A considerably more affordable option with a similarly warm voicing is the Bokeh Closed.
Do ZMF models need a special amplifier?
Not necessarily. Many ZMF models do benefit noticeably from a high-quality headphone amplifier, though. The dynamic 300-ohm models in particular pair very well with suitable tube or solid-state amplifiers.
Are ZMF headphones suitable for tube amplifiers?
Yes. The 300-ohm models Auteur Classic and Atrium in particular often work very well with high-quality tube headphone amplifiers.
What do different ear pads do on ZMF headphones?
Other pads change not only comfort, but can also audibly affect bass, midrange, treble and spatiality. At ZMF, the ear pads are therefore an important part of the voicing.
Are ZMF headphones open or closed?
Both. ZMF offers numerous models in open as well as closed versions, among them the Bokeh, Atrium and Caldera.
Are the ZMF Aeolus and Vérité still available?
ZMF now builds the Aeolus and Vérité only in small group orders – ask us if you are interested.
