The Rockna Wavedream NET combines streaming, CD transport, and local playback in a no-compromise high-end source. FPGA architecture, RAM buffering, and linear power supplies for ultimate sound quality.
High-end music server & CD transport with FPGA audio engine and RAM buffering
The Rockna Wavedream NET is far more than a conventional music server. It combines three core functions into a system uncompromisingly designed for sound quality: streaming server, local storage playback, and a memory-based CD transport. This makes it the central digital source in demanding high-end systems – especially when paired with the Rockna Wavedream DAC via the native HDlink (I2S) connection.
The concept follows a clear idea: bringing all digital audio sources together in a perfectly controlled environment and delivering them under optimal conditions – free from the typical interference of conventional computer or network architectures.
At the heart of the Wavedream NET is a powerful FPGA audio engine that first loads all audio data into a large RAM buffer. The actual output is then fully decoupled – clocked by an ultra-low phase noise master clock.
This approach minimizes timing errors (jitter) and brings the digital signal closer to the ideal of a perfect source. At the same time, the FPGA handles disc playback entirely in exclusive mode – completely separated from the server system.
Thanks to integrated DSP units, the FPGA can also perform real-time audio processing without burdening the server CPU – a key advantage for stability and sound purity.
The integrated music server is galvanically isolated from the audio section, preventing any unwanted noise from reaching sensitive signal paths.
Rockna deliberately avoids a “more is better” approach when it comes to processing power: instead of oversized CPUs, the Wavedream NET uses an efficient, well-balanced system with sufficient headroom for parallel audio processes – while maintaining lower noise and reduced electromagnetic emissions.
The foundation is a lightweight Linux system, specifically optimized for stable audio playback.
Unlike many streaming solutions, the Wavedream NET uses exclusively linear power supplies – including for the server section.
Avoiding switching power supplies reduces high-frequency noise and creates a significantly quieter electrical environment. The result is a clean, stable power supply for all critical components – a key factor in overall system performance.
The WDNET software platform combines multiple audio services into a clean, web-based interface, easily accessible via smartphone, tablet, or computer.
Thanks to the integrated update function, the system always stays up to date – new features and services can be installed directly via the interface.
Independent measurements and reviews clearly confirm the technical ambition of the Wavedream NET.
“The Wavedream NET is a top-of-the-line music server, CD transport, and streamer. It’s currently the best performing digital source I’ve tested, beating out the Singxer SU-6 to take the crown for top performer.”
— GoldenSound (Review & Measurements)
Particular emphasis is placed on the extremely clean signal processing, the precise clocking enabled by the FPGA architecture, and the strict separation between server and audio sections.
In practice, this results in playback defined by exceptional calmness, precision, and stability – regardless of whether the source is streaming, local storage, or CD.
| Audio formats | PCM 44.1 kHz – 384 kHz, DSD64 – DSD256 |
| Storage | SSD 1 TB or 2 TB (optional 4 or 8 TB) |
| Inputs | Ethernet (LAN), USB mass storage |
| Outputs | SPDIF, AES/EBU, BNC, 2× HDlink (I2S), USB |
The Wavedream NET is not an “all-in-one” solution in the usual sense – but a purely audiophile digital source that brings together streaming, local playback, and CD transport at reference level.
