One of the most well-known High-End Hifi headphones ever, and the successor to a model that had a big impact on the entire hifi landscape. Incredible haptics, a mix beween understatement and luxury, and sonically firmly in the ultra high end: Natural timbre, dynamic with a great punch already at low listening levels. Addictive.
Dynamic high-end reference headphone
The best headphone in the world.
That’s how it’s often described. And while its price naturally attracts criticism, almost nobody truly questions its status. But why?
The Utopia is no exotic specialist. It is neither electrostatic nor planar magnetic — but built around an exceptional dynamic driver. At the same time it is remarkably easy to drive: with 80 Ω impedance and 104 dB sensitivity, it even performs effortlessly from a smartphone dongle.
Compared to other flagships that focus on individual specialties — bass texture, huge soundstage, treble detail or speed — the Utopia stands out as a perfectly complete package. No real weaknesses, and one standout trait few can match: impact and dynamics.
On first extended listening, I kept adjusting the volume knob. Drums hit with startling force, while background details remained effortlessly separated. That natural dynamic expression is rare. First shocking. Then addictive.
Its tuning is so balanced that EQ never crosses your mind. Enough bass. Enough treble. Nothing excessive. Understated — but at the highest level.
Think Ferrari LaFerrari versus Bugatti Veyron. One is faster on paper. The other delivers perfect real-world performance. The Utopia belongs firmly in the latter category.
“The Focal Utopia 2022 is a magnificent-sounding dynamic driver headphone, truly worthy of being called a high-end flagship.”
“It looks beautiful, sounds incredibly pleasing, and has the resolution and transparency to find the perfect setup.”
“If headphones matter to you and cost is not a stumbling point — just buy the best. The Utopia deserves its end-game status.”

From left to right: sub-bass, bass, mids, then rising treble, naturally amplified by the human ear.
As an open-back design, Utopia shows a gentle sub-bass roll-off, a mild 1.5 kHz presence lift, and slightly relaxed treble — ideal for long, fatigue-free listening.
