Not everyone needs the multitude of features the HM1 offers — all the more reason many will welcome that Michael Zähl has now brought a significantly more affordable model to market: the Zähl H1.
Same amplifier stage as the HM1 — lower price, integrated power supply. What are the differences?
With the exact same amplifier stage as the HM1, the H1 makes its debut: a lower price, power supply integrated into the chassis, and sonics on par — but what do you give up?
| Feature | Zähl HM1 | Zähl H1 |
|---|---|---|
| Amplifier design | Switchable Class A/Servo, dual-mono design | Switchable Class A/Servo, dual-mono design |
| Treble/Bass EQ | Subtle 2-band EQ | Not included |
| Mixable & A/B switchable stereo inputs | Included | Not included |
| Preamplifier / line-out function | Included | Not included |
| Power supply | External (HMP1) | Integrated in mu-metal chassis |
| Headphone outputs | 6.3 mm, 4-pin XLR | 6.3 mm, 4-pin XLR, 4.4 mm Pentaconn |
| Input sensitivity | Standard | Extended (better suited for sensitive IEMs) |
| Stereo width adjustment | Included | Included |
| Designed & built by | Michael Zähl, Germany | Michael Zähl, Germany |
Notably, the unique stereo width adjustment remains — while features such as the second stereo input and the EQ were removed to make room for the now integrated power supply.
On top of that, the expanded input sensitivity settings make it possible to drive even very sensitive IEMs — a practical advantage of this version.
Reviewers almost feel the need to apologize for being so overwhelmingly positive about a product in a review:
