HIFIMAN HE6 Remastered

The return of the HE6 legend – original driver concept, refined long-session comfort

With the HE6 Remastered, HIFIMAN brings back one of the most influential planar magnetic headphones in its history. The new edition is based on the driver architecture of the early HE6 and combines the uncompromising concept of the original with a lighter, more modern headband.

The HE6 Remastered remains deliberately designed for serious desktop systems. Its extremely low sensitivity calls for a powerful headphone amplifier, but a carefully matched chain is rewarded with high resolution, rapid transient response and exceptional dynamic authority.

This is not a simplified successor, but a focused return to the original HE6 philosophy: direct, controlled, open and uncompromising.

The original HE6 concept, remastered

According to HIFIMAN, the HE6 Remastered once again employs the driver design of the original HE6. The classic circular ear cups, open construction and characteristic driver architecture are retained, while modern 3.5 mm cup connectors and the second-generation suspension headband make day-to-day use more contemporary.

Unlike the easier-to-drive HE600, the HE6 Remastered is explicitly aimed at listeners seeking the demanding nature and sonic authority of the classic HE6.

Nanometer-thickness diaphragm

At its heart is an extremely light nanometer-thickness diaphragm. Its low moving mass allows the membrane to accelerate and stop with remarkable speed. Fine transients, cymbal decay, the texture of string instruments and complex spatial layers can therefore be reproduced with precision and clarity.

The large planar magnetic drive distributes force evenly across the diaphragm, supporting low distortion, clean definition and confident control even with highly dynamic recordings.

Sound character: fast, punchy and neutral-bright

The HE6 Remastered is not tuned around an artificially elevated bass response or an overly softened presentation. Its low end extends deeply while remaining linear, tight and controlled. Its impact comes from transient force and dynamic contrast, rather than additional bass quantity.

The midrange is open and immediate, while the treble is detailed and present. The result is a transparent, energetic presentation that clearly reveals the quality of the recording, amplifier and source.

A headphone that demands real power

With a sensitivity of 83.5 dB and an impedance of 50 Ω, the HE6 Remastered is among the most demanding headphones on the market. Smartphone outputs, laptop jacks and basic dongle DACs are not its intended environment.

A high-quality desktop headphone amplifier with strong current delivery and generous power reserves is recommended. Proper amplification provides more than volume: it is essential for control, dynamic headroom, bass precision and stable imaging.

Improved comfort, classic appearance

The new composite suspension headband distributes weight more evenly and reduces total weight from approximately 550 g for the early HE6 configuration to 522 g. The Remastered remains a substantial high-end headphone, but its updated structure is better suited to extended listening sessions.

Visually, the HE6 Remastered stays true to its heritage. Circular open-back cups, a technical grille structure and a restrained black finish underline its purpose-built reference character.

Press and listening impressions

Note: shortly after launch, coverage of the HE6 Remastered consists mainly of show impressions and early listening reports. The first excerpt refers directly to the new model. The following two excerpts concern the original HE6 and are clearly included as historical context.

Headphones.com – HE6 Remastered first impressions

  • “Pleasantly punchy and dynamic.”
  • “Neutral-bright sounding headphone.”
  • “What I’ve been hoping for.”

Headfonics – historical review of the original HE6

“Smooth highs without any hint of sibilance” and, with the right system, “a really involving special headphone.”

Systematic Sound – comparison of original HE6 versions

“Dynamic contrast, especially macrodynamic, is stellar” – a defining quality behind the HE6 reputation.
