Portable CD player with a real tube stage, USB DAC and bidirectional Bluetooth

Cayin has been building tube CD players for decades – with the CP6 the concept moves into a portable device for the first time. The player combines classic CD playback with a full USB DAC, bidirectional Bluetooth and a balanced headphone amplifier in an aluminium chassis measuring 167 × 151 × 29 mm.

Two selected Raytheon JAN6418 NOS tubes form the basis for three selectable timbres: Classic Tube, Modern Tube and Solid-State. Switching is done with a button and applies to the headphone output, the line output and even the Bluetooth output.

The four-channel, fully balanced, discrete headphone amplifier can be switched between Class A and Class AB and covers impedances from 8 to 600 Ω. On mains power the balanced 4.4 mm output delivers up to 1.3 W per channel into 16 Ω, the 3.5 mm output 600 mW. Two Cirrus Logic CS4308P handle conversion, an XMOS XU316 the USB input up to PCM 384 kHz and DSD256.

The Qualcomm QCC3083 chipset makes the CP6 a Bluetooth 5.4 transmitter and receiver – with LDAC, aptX Adaptive and aptX HD on the receiving side. CDs can also be ripped losslessly straight to USB storage. Coaxial and optical digital outputs connect the player to a home system.

The 7,300 mAh battery lasts up to 7.5 hours depending on the mode and charges via QC 3.0 / PD 2.0 in about 2.5 hours; alternatively the CP6 runs from the power supply with higher output power. A 2.3-inch colour display, control via the Cayin Control app and a proprietary anti-shock mechanism for the drive complete the package.
