With the N6iii, Cayin carries its signature modular concept into its third generation: the digital motherboard and audio circuit sit on a removable board that swaps tool-free for another module in seconds. That turns a single device into what is effectively an entire line-up of DACs and amplifier circuits – and a one-time purchase into a platform you can keep upgrading with new boards.

The N6iii ships as standard with the C201 motherboard option, running eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 converter chips – a delta-sigma design known for high dynamic range and, in particular, a transparent, well-resolved and pleasantly toned midrange. Alternatively you can fit the E203 board with two ESS ES9038Q2M chips for a more analytical, higher-resolution character, or the R202 board with a discrete R2R circuit for a warmer, more organic tonal balance – each with its own sonic signature but sharing the same amplifier section. The whole system runs on a Snapdragon 665 under Android, playing PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and native DSD, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and streaming-app support.

The 5-inch full-screen display is notably larger than the 4.2-inch panel of the predecessor N6ii, yet stays compact enough for one-handed use. Music loads via microSD card, with output through 3.5mm SE, 4.4mm BAL, or a shared line-/pre-out. The 9000mAh battery lasts up to 14.2 hours with the C201 board, in a 126 x 77.8 x 23mm chassis weighing 350 grams.

Positioned between the entry-level N3Ultra and the 1-bit flagship N7+, the N6iii is the player for anyone who wants to assemble their own sound character: swappable boards instead of compromise. Anyone looking for a single, fixed tuning without any tinkering is better served by the N7+ or N8iii.
