Streamer, DAC, preamp and headphone amplifier in one chassis – with a switchable tube or solid-state stage

The ID6 combines what usually takes three boxes on a desk: network streamer, D/A converter, preamplifier and a powerful headphone amplifier. Cayin adds its tube expertise in the form of three switchable timbres: Classic Tube, Modern Tube and Solid-State, selectable at the push of a button or via the Cayin Control app.

At the heart of the tube stage is a 12AU7 dual triode, cascaded with MOS-FETs and placed behind a viewing window. According to Cayin, Classic Tube stands for a warm, smooth presentation with vocals up front, Modern Tube for a wide stage with tight bass, and Solid-State for maximum precision and detail. All three timbres are available for the headphone and preamp outputs alike.

The digital section runs a customised Android 14 on a Rockchip RK3576 octa-core processor with a 6-inch FHD+ touchscreen (1080 × 2160). Streaming services run as apps directly on the unit; music from USB drives, the network or an internally fitted M.2 NVMe SSD (2280 slot) plays locally. Two ES9082Q DACs operate in mono mode, a 16-core XMOS XU316 handles the USB input – up to PCM 32-bit / 768 kHz and native DSD512. Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (Qualcomm QCC5125) are on board.

The headphone amplifier is four-channel, fully balanced and discrete, built with Nexperia transistors, switchable between Class A and Class AB, and delivers 2.6 W into 32 Ω or 4 W into 16 Ω at the balanced 4.4 mm output; the 6.35 mm output provides 0.9 W into 32 Ω. Please note: the balanced output is a 4.4 mm Pentaconn, not a 4-pin XLR. As a preamp the ID6 offers volume-controlled XLR and RCA outputs (12 and 6 V RMS) plus fixed-level line outputs. Digital outputs are I²S over HDMI, coaxial and optical; inputs are USB, coaxial, optical and HDMI ARC. A toroidal transformer feeds the digital and analogue sections separately.

The aluminium chassis measures 310 × 243 × 89 mm and comes in silver or black. The display shows a spectrum analyser or VU meters, and an illuminated ring around the volume knob indicates the current format.
