iFi iDSD GR 2
The Gryphon, reworked – more power, a touchscreen, lossless Bluetooth
With the iDSD GR 2, iFi replaces the xDSD Gryphon, one of the brand’s most celebrated portable designs. The concept is unchanged: a pocket-sized unit fed by phone, laptop or player via USB, S/PDIF or Bluetooth that drives anything from sensitive in-ears to demanding over-ears. New are the Burr-Brown PCM1795 converter, an output stage roughly 50 percent more powerful at 1,513 mW into 32 ohms, and a capacitive OLED colour touchscreen for setting input, filter, XBass, XSpace and iEMatch directly on the device.
The DAC uses a current-output architecture and handles PCM up to 768 kHz and DSD512. The amplifier is fully balanced end to end and built around Class A op-amps. JVCKENWOOD’s K2HD technology restores harmonic content lost when recordings are digitised – switchable, never forced. Over Bluetooth 5.4 the GR 2 receives aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, LDAC and LHDC, i.e. lossless CD quality from Android devices that support the codec.
Useful day to day: hybrid power mode draws from an attached USB supply and spares the 4,900 mAh battery, which otherwise lasts around seven hours. The iEMatch setting lowers the level by 12 dB and with it the noise floor for sensitive in-ears; output impedance stays below 4.5 ohms. Firmware updates and settings are handled through the iFi Nexis app. Alongside the two headphone outputs (4.4 mm balanced, 3.5 mm S-Balanced) there are balanced and single-ended line inputs and outputs, so the GR 2 also works as a pure DAC or as an amplifier for an existing source.

Who is this for?
For anyone who wants one device on the go and at the desk: the GR 2 drives in-ears as well as planars in the €1,000 class, connects to a phone over Bluetooth and to a computer over USB. If you only listen at a desk and need more power or RCA/XLR outputs, the NEO iDSD 3 is the better fit.
