Why we recommend it
The most mature version of the HE1000: drivers fully exposed on both sides, reflections largely eliminated, audibly better timbre on voices. For us the headphone that comes closest to the Susvara – without its price and without its appetite for amplification.

Reference planar-magnetic headphone with Unveiled technology
HIFIMAN has worked relentlessly to find the best version of each of its headphones—culminating in the “Unveiled” technology and a radical question: What happens when the driver is fully exposed on both sides, eliminating reflections as much as possible?
The results are in, and the HE1000 Unveiled is, in many ways, the best and most mature incarnation of the HE1000 to date.
- Noticeably improved vocal timbre
- Exceptionally spacious, open and airy
- Very balanced, natural, and remarkably smooth
Overall, the HE1000 Unveiled is a fantastic release from HIFIMAN. They continue their run of headphones that push technical boundaries and deliver wonderful listening experiences. It’s a headphone I recommend hearing for yourself—because it might give you a taste of the audiophile magic you’ve been missing. That’s why we’re awarding the HE1000 Unveiled the MajorHifi Gold.

It’s rare that a headphone stays on your mind the moment you’ve heard it—yet the HIFIMAN HE1000 UNVEILED did exactly that for me. The “unveiled” driver implementation seems to let the drivers breathe freely, resulting in a natural, sonically accurate timbre.
It creates a huge, precise 3D sound panorama with captivating vocal reproduction. Overall, it delivers excellent performance.

The HE1000 Unveiled is the right choice for anyone who wants to extract maximum transparency from the reference lineup – by consistently removing the protective grille on both sides of the driver.

What does this mean?
The line marked as target is something you could call the “ideal” curve: a target response derived from research by the Harman group, exploring what kind of headphone tuning tends to be preferred by a broad range of listeners – regardless of age or demographics. This is often referred to as the Harman Target.
From left to right you see sub-bass, bass, mids, and then the curve tilts upward where treble begins. That part of the spectrum is naturally amplified by the shape of the human ear.
Sub-bass sits clearly below the target – common for open headphones, the Harman target includes a strong bass shelf, the bass is slightly reduced. The lower mids are neutral, the presence region around 3 kHz hits the target. The treble follows the target, above 10 kHz there is a little extra air. Left and right channels track each other closely, a sign of careful driver matching.
