Below a thousand euros, phono stages usually economise on one thing: adjustability. You get fixed gain, fixed loading, and if your cartridge does not suit, hard luck. The PH-5.2 argues the opposite case: nine loading values from 10 ohms to 47 kilohms, gain from 40 dB for MM up to 60 dB for MC, and three equalisation curves for records cut before RIAA became the standard.

It is operated from a colour touchscreen on the front — unusual at this price, where DIP switches on the back are the norm. The PH-5.2 also remembers two cartridge profiles, one MM and one MC. If you swap between two cartridges, you tap once instead of setting gain and loading again each time.

Gold Note explicitly describes the 5.2 not as a facelift but as a new design: a new case in sand-blasted, black anodised aluminium which the manufacturer says interacts less with magnetic fields, and a stronger internal power supply. An infrasonic filter at 36 dB per octave can be switched in. Outputs are provided both balanced on XLR and unbalanced on RCA — also not a given below a thousand euros.

One difference from the larger PH-10 should be clear: the PH-5.2 has one input. If you want two turntables or two tonearms connected at once, you need the PH-10.

A note from us: The PH-5.2 only reached the shops in spring 2026. At the time of writing there is no independent review — what circulates online is announcements and dealer copy. We deliberately do not list the awards won by its predecessor, the PH-5, because the PH-5.2 is a different device. As soon as a genuine review appears, we will add it here.

Who is this for?

For anyone with a decent turntable who finds that the phono input built into their amplifier is the limiting factor. The PH-5.2 costs less than most of the cartridges people run into it, and still adapts cleanly to any of them. If you want two turntables connected, or run a very low-output MC, go straight to the PH-10. And if a published review matters to you, this one is still waiting for its first — we would rather say so than leave it out.
