A standalone high-end DAC with two selectable sound characters

The Matrix Audio ND-1 is a standalone DAC for anyone who already owns a streamer or transport and wants to pair it with the best possible converter stage. Instead of network features, the ND-1 focuses entirely on the conversion itself – and takes an unusual, remarkably flexible approach to it.

The "DAC 1+2" architecture separates digital processing from the actual conversion: an AK4191EQ chip handles digital modulation and signal processing, while two separate AK4499EX chips each convert exclusively the left or right channel. An ultra-low phase-noise precision clock provides timing stability, and an external clock input lets you connect an even higher-grade reference clock.

What makes the ND-1 particularly interesting is the choice between two switchable sound modes: Transformer mode, built around Lundahl transformers, produces a warmer, more analogue character; Op-Amp mode delivers a faster, more precise, more detailed presentation. A linear toroidal transformer and a strict separation of the digital and analogue sections round out this elaborate design. On the digital side, the ND-1 accepts coaxial, optical, AES/EBU, I2S-LVDS and USB-B/C; on the output side, XLR, RCA and a trigger output are on offer.

Paired with a pure network transport such as the Matrix Audio NT-1 or the more compact TT-1, the ND-1 forms a classic two-box chain: one unit for data transport, one for the actual conversion – each optimised for exactly its own job.
