Triple-timbre DAP with genuine NOS tubes – the entry point into Cayin's player range

The Cayin N3Ultra is the entry point into Cayin's DAP line-up – and at the same time the only player at its price to offer a genuine tube experience. As successor to the N3Pro it inherits the core idea of pairing two Raytheon JAN6418 NOS vacuum tubes with a solid-state circuit, but takes a clear step forward in both sound and technology: a faster, smoother interface, a reworked DAC section, and newly voiced timbre modes that leave the old N3Pro sounding comparatively flat and compressed by direct comparison.

The triple-timbre concept can be switched at every output – single-ended, balanced and even line-out – between Solid State, Classic Tube and Modern Tube. In Classic Tube mode, the tubes run with a higher level of thermal noise for a particularly rich, warm presentation; in Modern Tube mode that noise floor is markedly reduced and the sound stays cleaner without fully losing the tube's harmonic colouration. Conversion runs through two AK4493S chips in mono mode for fully differential outputs – a configuration that noticeably improves signal-to-noise ratio over running the same chip in plain stereo mode – controlled by a Qualcomm 425 processor on an Android base, with touchscreen, a physical volume wheel and dedicated buttons. Cayin deliberately leaves out Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to avoid RF interference with the sensitive tube circuitry.

The 4.1-inch, 720x1280 display sits in a compact chassis weighing just 204 grams. Music is loaded via microSD card (up to 1TB) or USB-OTG, with output over 3.5mm SE, 4.4mm BAL, or digitally via USB-C and S/PDIF coax. Battery life ranges from 7.6 hours (balanced, tube) to 11.8 hours (single-ended, solid-state) depending on mode, and QC3.0 fast charging brings the battery back to 80% in roughly an hour.

Compared to the larger N6iii, N7+ and N8iii, the N3Ultra is clearly the most compact and affordable entry point – without modular DAC boards or flagship DAC chips, but with the same ambition to make Cayin's tube craftsmanship tangible.
