Reference class, magnetically decoupled

The Xtension range is Pro-Ject’s reference class, and the Xtension 9 Evolution is its entry point. At 16 kilograms it is heavier still than the X8 B, and it takes a different route to isolation.

The deck stands on three magnetic feet. They carry the chassis on a magnetic field instead of supporting it on springs or rubber. The advantage: there is no mechanical path for vibration to travel up from the surface below, and none of the rocking that soft suspensions bring with them.

The platter combines aluminium, TPE and vinyl and weighs 5.4 kilograms. The vinyl surface serves the same purpose as the acrylic platter on the Reference 10: its resonance behaviour resembles that of the record rather than opposing it with a foreign material. The bearing is inverted as on the X8 B, with a ceramic ball and magnetic support.

The 9-inch carbon tonearm accepts cartridges from 4 to 14 grams; the Pick it DS2 MC cartridge is fitted at the factory. The deck is intended for listeners with a developed system who want an analogue source that will not become its weakest link.

Who is this turntable for?

For developed systems in which the analogue source must not be the weakest link. The Pick it DS2 MC cartridge is fitted at the factory and the arm accepts cartridges from 4 to 14 grams, so a later change is not restricted.
